PIGG’S PEAK – It may be a blessing to some but for pupils, the rain has made it difficult for them to reach school.

One such school is Ekubongeni High, which has a total of 460 pupils and only a third of them made it to class.
The rest failed to cross flooded rivers to the school.

Since the beginning of the week, a continuous downpour has resulted in many rivers overflowing.
Ekubongeni High School is situated in Bulandzeni near Buhleni.

The school had been cut off from a large part of the community by the Mzimnene River, which had been overflowing since Monday.
The school is one of the largest in the area, with a high enrolment of pupils who travel to the school from Buhleni or Ndzingeni near Pigg’s Peak.
Out of the 460 pupils from the school, about 71 of them were able to attend class.

While some of the pupils remained at home, a large number of them travelled several kilometres, only to find that they could not cross because the river was flooded.
This appears to have become a tradition for the school every time there is a continuous downpour, as it has to suspend classes due to the flooded Mzimnene.
Head teacher Funwa Dlamini expressed hope that the situation would change today so that operations may continue as normal.

He confirmed that only 71 pupils managed to reach school due to the heavy rainfall.
Dlamini said on Tuesday, there were just over 100 pupils who attended class but that the number dropped yesterday.
He explained that the major challenge was that the bridge was very low, resulting in the river overflowing.

He also said it was possible for one to walk on the bridge despite the floods but added that he did not want to take a chance with the pupils.
“We advised them to go back home,” said Dlamini.

Due to the large number of rivers cutting through northern Hhohho, more schools have been affected by absenteeism as pupils could not reach school.
Ekudvwaleni High school was also affected due to the Mlumati River overflowing.
