NHLANGANO – The heavy downpour experienced in Nhlangano on Monday night brought operations at the Shiselweni Regional offices to a standstill yesterday, after workers arrived in the morning to find offices waterlogged.

The heavy rainfall, which started at around 6pm on Monday and lasted for several hours, caused flooding in several government offices, including the population registry and Immigration offices, resulting in the destruction of furniture and some documents.

Workers complained that whenever there was heavy rain, water leaks through several openings on the roofs, which caused a lot of inconvenience to workers and members of the public alike.

For instance, yesterday members of the public who had visited the offices for various services, had to wait for over five hours while staff members tried to clear the mess in the offices.

Some upset members of the public lamented the fact that they had arrived at the offices as early as 7am, only to be told they would have to wait a little longer after staff members found the offices in a mess when they arrived shortly before 8am.

“There was nothing one could have done. We could see it was just water everywhere. No one was able to help us,” said one of the interviewed people.
The situation at the regional offices has resulted in calls for government officials to expedite proposed plans for the construction of new government offices complex, in order to avoid further damage to documents and furniture.

Frustrated workers who were found cleaning their premises yesterday morning, called on government to urgently find an alternative place for them to work, since the obtaining situation worked to the detriment of their clients.

“This is a very serious problem. It no longer calls for the renovation of the offices but we need a new structure altogether. The problem has been here for a long time and it seems like it will linger on for some time,” said the civil servant.
