MBABANE - With the issue of elderly grants being one that they fought for throughout the previous year, MPs are expecting that it will be part of the Speech from the Throne today.

As customary, His Majesty King Mswati III will officiate at the annual opening of Parliament, at which he will deliver his speech, an address that will pave way for the new business year.

The opening of Parliament, which is attended not only by members of the august House but also dignitaries and the public at large, is important in that it provides an occasion where all three arms of government (Executive, Legislature and Judiciary) get to receive the government programme of action for the year.

The Speech from the Throne is important in that it provides policy directives and deliverables for the year ahead and lays the foundation for executive action.

Random interviews with some Members of Parliament revealed that most of them were hopeful that His Majesty would provide a directive on the fate of the elderly who had just turned 60 years but were not accommodated in the grants last year.

Another issue which the MPs said they expected from His Majesty’s speech was that of the challenges in the education sector, including allowances for tertiary students, food shortages in schools and Free Primary Education (FPE) grants.

Worth noting was that most of the MPs were not oblivious to the fact that the availability of all the services that they wanted for the citizens depended on the budget.
