MBABANE – Going to school every morning for teachers and pupils of Mangweni High School is not a walk in the park as they are terrorised by snakes.

The experience is even worse for the teachers who discovered a snake in their staff room.
The teachers found a snake in their makeshift staff room – which also is used to keep building material.

In 2017, when Form V pupils were writing their examination, teachers of the school had to abandon the class they used as a staff room and opt for the Form five class. This was after a snake dropped from the ceiling.

The teachers having witnessed this abandoned the class and according to a close source, they have dubbed the classroom enyokeni.
Following this, the teachers who were using the dilapidated structure as a staffroom abandoned as they feared they may fall victim to snakebites.

This, Mathokoza Zwane, Head teacher of the school, confirmed. He noted in an interview that the school faced challenges of snakes as it was in the lowveld and dense forests were in close proximity.
“Teachers abandoned their staff room to use the form-five class as they were scared of snakes that hiss anytime of the day in places that seem to be close to where they are.”

Further, cementing the fears that the occupants of the school have was a teacher within the school. The teacher, who offered the interview under anonymity, said one of the teachers in the school was so traumatised by the issue of snakes such that even if a lizard was moving in a hidden space, she screams and rushes outside the staff room.
