MBABANE – For safety reasons, Victor Gamedze’s murder accused, businenessman Sipho Shongwe had to be taken to Matsapha Maximum Prison instead of Zakhele Remand Centre.

Members of the public who wanted to satisfy themselves that Shongwe had indeed been arrested waited in anticipation at Zakhele Remand Centre, only to discover later that he had been taken to Matsapha Maximum Prison.

Some of the people found at the entrance to the Zakhele Remand Centre said they were shocked by Shongwe’s arrest and did not believe that he had been allegedly linked to Gamedze’s murder.

Initially, Shongwe had applied in court to be remanded at Zakhele Remand Centre instead of Sidwashini Correctional facility because he was receiving death threats.

As such, security was a bit tight at Zakhele as it was anticipated that he would be taken there.
Some correctional officers were found keeping guard at the facility from outside. “We are aware that it is a bit impossible to see him while outside the correctional building as we have been informed that he would be transported in the big correctional vehicles, however, we just want to make sure he is indeed taken in.

“We just want to satisfy ourselves that indeed someone has been arrested in connection to Victor’s death. We applaud the police who conducted their investigations and made an arrest exactly eight days after Gamedze was killed,” a businessman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
