MANZINI – Swazi hawkers came home empty-handed after being robbed thousands of Emalangeni by armed robbers in South Africa.

They also had their travel documents taken away from them during the brazen bus robbery in the neighbouring Republic.
The incident, which involved a total of 52 Swazi hawkers, including the bus driver and conductors, took place at Ultra City in South Africa on, at round 2am on Saturday.

A source close to the matter said the hawkers were travelling in Zulu Kaya Lami Bus Service and were en route to buy stock in Johannesburg when about five daring robbers, who were armed to the teeth pounced on them while they were inside the bus.
The source said the bus was parked at a filling station for the driver to take a rest before continuing with the journey.

He said the robbers jumped into the bus through the passenger door, waking up those in the front and in the process ordered them to surrender their belongings at gunpoint.

It was gathered that the robbers had already robbed a total of 12 hawkers and one of them lost a sum of E25 000 cash while others were carrying E15 000, E12 000, and E10 000. Some of them also lost their travel documents in the process.

Zulu Kaya Lami Bus Services Coordinator Mabhawodi Dlamini said luckily, before the robbers could rob many, a patrolling police car passed by and the robbers abandoned their mission and disappeared into the nearby overgrowth.
He said they then called the South African Police Service (SAPS) toll free line 10111 and reported the robbery.
