MBABANE – The notion that old money can be sold at a good price has allegedly tempted a security guard to steal old coins amounting to E50 000 from an elderly woman.

According to the elderly woman, Vera Adam, her money was kept in a trunk in her house when Nhlanhla Ndlangamandla, who was employed by her son, allegedly stole it.

Adam alleged that Ndlangamandla broke into her house after he learnt that she was at Big Bend. Upon her return from Big Bend, the elderly woman said she found her items, including blankets, scattered all over the floor. Her trunk, which was containing the money bags with the old coins was broken and the money was nowhere to be found.

“I was hurt to the extent that I lost weight because I had kept the money so that my future generation could see how the first coins looked. I do recall that among the coins were Tiki and the old 2c coin dating back to 1932,” she said.
Adam added that the money amounted to E50 000 because the culture of saving started when she was young and was getting money from her mother who died in 1979.

She mentioned that apart from the money that she used to get from her mother, she always made sure that every coin, especially change went to the box.
Adam stated that there was a time where old coins were in demand but she decided to keep hers for her grandchildren.
“I am very sad about my money and I want it back, even if 20 years may pass,” the elderly woman said angrily.
