MBABANE – Has Betram Stewart’s signature been forged? This is the question that came up after the ministry of economic planning and development principal secretary distanced himself from a letter appointing companies to construct a hangar at the VVIP King Mswati III International Airport.

The project is estimated to cost close to E300 million.
The construction of the hangar has been awarded to a joint venture known to this publication. The names of two of the companies have been deliberately withheld as they could not be reached for comment.

An officer of one of the appointed companies, who asked not to be identified as he was not mandated to speak to the media, said they were not in a position to respond to any questions, but referred the reporter to the ministry.
The letter, which this publication has a copy of, has Stewart’s signature and name, dated November 30, 2017.

However, Stewart, when first approached to confirm that an award has been issued for the construction of the hangar, said he was not aware that a company had already been appointed.
He went on to advise this publication to approach the said companies, who allegedly have been appointed to undertake the work as he does not discuss other people’s business.
This was after he had been informed of the letter.
When further asked if a tender had been issued for the project, he promised to check when he returned to the office as he was out when called at the time.
