MANZINI – An unknown elderly woman, estimated to be 90 years old, died after she was run over by a train.

The incident took place at Lanjane, Siphofaneni in the Lubombo Region, along Matsapha-Phuzamoya rail line on Tuesday at around noon. A source, who was among the first people to arrive at the scene, said the elderly woman was on the railway line and the driver of the light locomotive train 9912, who saw her as the train was approaching, tried to signal to her to make way by blowing the horn.

“However, the elderly woman remained on the railway line and because the driver saw her in close proximity, he could not avoid knocking her down,” the source said.

He said the body of the unknown woman, who died on the spot, was found on the tracks with severe injuries.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba confirmed the incident and said the police were still investigating the matter and trying to find relatives of the deceased woman.

Swaziland Railway Corporate Communications Specialist Sive Manana also confirmed the matter and said it was a painful incident as it claimed the life of an elderly woman. On behalf of the company, Manana sent condolences to the family of the deceased woman. He said they had noted that such incidents were common during the festive season extending to the marula season. He said as an organisation, they tried to educate the public through safety campaigns which they stage in the communities and in schools, especially in the beginning of the year.

Furthermore, he said they issued warnings through the media throughout the year where they warned the public against playing along the railway line because train accidents were usually fatal.
