SITEKI – Police were roped in to perform customs duties at Mhlumeni border gate yesterday amid the strike by Swaziland Revenue Authority (SRA) employees.

Officers from Mhlumeni Police Post abandoned their official duties to do the jobs of SRA employees in an attempt to keep the border operating smoothly despite the strike.

A motorist, who went through the border, said he saw police officers processing documents for vehicles and goods that were coming into or leaving the country through the border.

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba, confirmed that Mhlumeni police performed duties of customs officials yesterday.

However, he clarified that the officers were not officially engaged by SRA but they voluntarily offered their services.
“As police officers, we have a responsibility to intervene and assist where there is a need in society. We took it upon ourselves to assist so that there could be a free flow of traffic at the border. We have not taken over the jobs of SRA employees,” said Superintendent Mamba.

He said the officers were assisting the SRA officials who have been deployed to the border gate as substitutes for the striking workers.
SRA’s Director of Communications Vusi Dlamini was unavailable for comment as his mobile phone rang unanswered when called yesterday afternoon.
