MATSAPHA – The Mozambican national who allegedly drove negligently, did car spinning stunts and knocked four textile workers, killing one and seriously injuring two, will be spending the rest of the year in custody.

The accused, Semisidine Sebestiao Latia (21), who resides at Mangozeni, yesterday appeared before Magistrate Mthokozisi Dlamini after he was arrested and charged with five traffic offences.

Accompanied by family members, Latia was informed by the prosecution that his bail request was opposed. this was because as a foreign national, he would easily evade remand hearings and also trial. In his first count, the charge sheet stated that Latia drove his vehicle, a VW sedan negligently and knocked a pedestrian, one Nokuthula Dlamini (33) of Lushikishini, who was certified dead upon arrival at RFM hospital.

In the second count, he allegedly drove negligently and knocked down two pedestrians, Lungile Mamba (29) of Mahlabatsini and Sifiso Nzima (33) of Logoba. Both pedestrians sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the RFM Hospital. Latia is alleged to have driven his vehicle without due care and attention and drove at a high speed, disregarding the high volume of pedestrians.
He also overtook on a solid line where the road was taking a bend to the right and further failed to avoid an accident which a reasonable driver would have avoided.

Latia was also slapped with an offence of driving his vehicle while he was unlicensed to drive any class and while the vehicle was unlicensed too. It was also gathered in court that the accused drove the vehicle which had allegedly been taken to the garage where he is employed without the owner’s consent.
