LOBAMBA – Foreign nationals who already hold licences for the 32 businesses reserved for locals are not yet off the hook.

The Deputy Senate President, Ngomuyayona Gamedze, submitted that the regulations should stipulate a cut off date for permits not to be renewed for all current holders. Gamedze made this submission in Senate during the tabling of the Report of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade or Business for Swazi Citizens, Regulations, 2017.

Gamedze said it would defeat the regulation’s purpose not to have a cut off date. Without being specific to a certain nationality, he submitted that some foreign nationals used technology to their advantage, as they were able to use the same licence for different business owners. He made an example that the regulations should state that by 2022, things should be a certain way and the foreign nationals be given a grace period until 2019.

Gamedze warned that not having a cut off period posed danger, in that they would continue operating the reserved businesses forever. He stated that the cut off period would be the only measure that would ensure that the regulations would benefit locals. He said that the foreign nationals were located in all corners of the country and he was worried about that some were able to ‘manufacture’ local documents.
“Sebatsatsa nema-signature lesiwasabako langatsatfwa, noma ungusidlani ngeke udlalele kuwo kodvwa bona bayakwati kudlalela kuwo,” submitted the shocked Gamedze.
