MANZINI – Fill up your tanks as a dry holiday season is looming. This is the warning that has been sent by Swaziland Water Services Corporation (SWSC) workers, who vowed to shut down water supply as from today due to delays in the payment of performance bonuses for 2017.

An inside source said the workers were not only threatening to engage in a nationwide strike, but also to shut down water supply during the festive holidays due to unpaid performance bonuses, which they usually get during the month of August.

The source said the workers were accusing their management of being coy with the truth behind the delays by saying they were still in a process of getting scope; a committee of ministers dealing with public enterprises issues, to approve the payment of their bonuses.
He said information that reached the workers was that scope had approved the payment of the bonuses to the employees and it excluded management. “Now, management is delaying all the workers in order to find a way to control the situation so that they benefit as well,” the source said.

He said for a long time under the company’s performance management system (PMS), management had been getting exorbitant bonuses while the ordinary workers received an average share. “The workers are now considering a strike action which could result to in unfortunate situation as there is an important national event coming soon; the Incwala ceremony and festive season. This will be detrimental because people will not have water yet it is a basic and important commodity that one cannot live without,” the source said. Furthermore, the source said following the decision by the workers, management has issued a notice discouraging the workers from engaging in a strike action.
