LOBAMBA – An investigation into the administration of the Phalala Fund Scheme is underway.

This follows the selection of a five-member committee by the House of Assembly, to probe some irregularities in the way the scheme was administered.

The committee, which comprises MPs Sandille Nxumalo, Saladin Magagula, Johane Shongwe, Menzi Dlamini and Thulani Dlamini, was selected during a sitting yesterday when MPs debated the Minister of Health Sibongile Simelane’s statement regarding the problems surrounding the fund.

Part of what the committee is expected to determine is the number of patients, the last time they went for referrals, the number of those who stopped and the reasons why, plus other challenges they faced when they had to be referred to hospitals outside the country.
During the debate, MPs argued that there were people who were illegally cashing in on the fund by not only being selective in the referral of patients but also through sending them to sub-standard hospitals outside the country, which compromised their health.

Other MPs stated that the Minister of Health Sibongile Simelane, had failed them in that she presented a statement which was of no use, as it did not provide any data on the number of patients that had been attended to or were on the waiting list.

Furthermore, MPs said it was disappointing that the minister had informed the House who the debt of E170 million owed by the Phalala Fund, was being investigated, as they argued that they believed her office was supposed to have all the data and information.

They mentioned that they expected Simelane to present a report that was clear on how patients had been sent for referral in the past few days or months, plus the dates on when they had gone for check-ups.
