MBABANE – Government’s fiscal crisis could land the Accountant General and Attorney General in jail.

This is because government is reportedly failing to pay a balance of E688 261.90 to a company that supplied uniforms and other accessories to the Royal Swaziland Police.

The initial amount which government owed Sentra Trading (PTY) Limited was E33 700 762. Government is reported to have paid E33 012 500.10 and this left a shortfall of E688 261.90.

The failure by government to pay the balance has resulted in the company filing an application at the High Court, where it is seeking an order committing the Accountant General and the Attorney General to prison for 30 days for alleged contempt of court.

Respondents in the matter are the National Commissioner of Police, Attorney General and the Accountant General.
In his founding affidavit, the company’s lawyer, Muzi Simelane, stated that the parties (Swaziland Government and Sentra Trading) entered into a Settlement Agreement after a series of negotiations.

He alleged that in terms of the agreement, government agreed to pay the entire sum of E33 700 762.
Simelane highlighted that this was pursuant to the applicant (Sentra Trading) having instituted proceedings against the Swaziland Government.

The lawyer mentioned that the Deed of Settlement was made an order of the court and was duly served to government.
“Notwithstanding the order of the court, the respondents have refused to comply and a letter written to both of them has failed to solicit any response,” submitted Simelane.
