NHLANGANO – It took the bravery of a carjacking victim to thwart a heist that was to take place at a shopping complex in Big Bend.

This was after the taxi driver managed to free himself from his car boot after being bundled by two men who had approached him as customers last Thursday at around 9pm, but ended up making off with the vehicle – a Toyota Cressida – shortly afterwards.

The victim had picked up the would-be thugs at the KFC parking lot situated within Zam Zam Shopping Complex in Nhlangano, oblivious to the fact that his car was only targeted by the rogues as a getaway car in the planned robbery.

The duo apparently asked him to ferry them to Qinisweni area, which is situated about 7km to the east of Nhlangano town. However, the thugs suddenly changed tune when the taxi man was about to drop them off at their intended destination.

The victim told the police that the two robbers pulled out guns and threatened to shoot immediately after he stopped the vehicle.
Investigating officers heard how the taxi driver was pulled out of the car, tied both hands and feet before being stuffed into the car boot.
He said the duo told him they had no intention of harming him if he cooperated.

“They said they only needed my car to transport something,” he told the police.
The thugs then sped off towards the Lavumisa direction, but the taxi driver managed to untie himself before jumping out off the car boot after travelling about 70km.
