MBABANE – “Tell us when our bonuses will be paid or the whole country will be in darkness.”

This was said by livid employees of the Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC) during a strike action that took place at the head office, Eluvatsini House, yesterday.

According to the employees, they had worked hard and deserved to earn the bonuses, especially because they did not receive the cost-of-living adjustment.

The employees defied a court order stopping the strike action. SEC management ran to court to try and stop the strike which was voted for by the employees during a meeting on Saturday.

From as early as 9am, employees had assembled before the Eluvatsini House where they demonstrated, demanding to see the company’s Managing Director (MD) Meshack Kunene. There was strong police presence as they were monitoring the demonstration to ensure that there was no violence.

Just after 12:30pm, the MD came out in readiness to address the protestors who anxiously waited for  him.
Before the MD could address them, employees told him what had brought them to the head office. The employees told Kunene point- blank that they had come to fetch their bonuses for the financial year 2015/2016 and 2016/2017. They said executive and management have been meeting regarding the matter with no solution.

According to the employees, they did not trust the management and wanted clarity from the MD.
Further, they told Kunene that it was all in his power to pay out the bonuses and it’s incumbent upon him to withdraw the 2015/2016 bonuses matter which was in court and settle it.
