MBABANE – The proposed Road Traffic Fines are too high and as a result, there is a call to slash some of them.

This was one of the findings of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport Portfolio Committee of the House of Assembly, which is chaired by Mhlangatane MP Mbalekelwa Ndwandwe.

As a result, Ndwandwe tabled a report in the House on Wednesday proposing an amendment of the fines.
For example, one of the proposed amendments was that the fine for an unlicensed driver be dropped to E1 000 from the initial E2 000.
The committee has also proposed that the E1 500 which had been recommended for people who run a red traffic light, be reduced to E500.  Currently a majority of traffic fines are E60.

The committee said it was their finding that the fines had not been reviewed since 2007 and that the regulations had taken too long to be tabled in Parliament.
Ndwandwe’s committee recommended that there should be a review of the traffic fines periodically.

“The committee recommend that the regulations should be effected within six months of the adoption of the report,” said Ndwandwe.
The report is yet to be debated and adopted by the Members of Parliament (MPs).

It suggested that the fines needed to be reduced so that the general public would be able to cope with payments. The MPs were also of the view that the E1 500, which had been proposed for the payment of failing to give way to Their Majesties, should be reduced to E500.

However, some of the MPs have agreed with the ministry’s amendments in certain proposed fines.
