MBABANE – Oblivious that a serious crime was happening right within their neighbourhood, residents of Msunduza woke up to find the ATM located at Solanis bombed.

Three armed men are said to have bombed the automated teller machine (ATM) belonging to First National Bank (FNB) situated at popular hangout spot, Solani’s Shisanyama and went away with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Unconfirmed reports were to the effect that the ATM  was last loaded  with money amounting to E200 000 last Friday.

The incident, which shocked residents of Msunduza and surrounding areas, happened in the early hours of yesterday. The balaclava-wearing men are said to have arrived at around 1:40am and found a security guard, identified as Bongani Malinga, who was on duty at the premises whom they tied using an electric cable and made him to lie down just next to the ATM. One of the men is said to have started fiddling with the ATM while another, who was carrying an iron rod, dug a hole behind a wall situated next to the entrance of the hangout spot which he allegedly used to plunge the explosive which later blew the machine open.

After the blast, the men are said to have started taking out the notes and filled them inside three bags they were carrying. As the scenario unfolded, another security guard, who was stationed inside Solani’s, watched the action while standing on a musical stage that is usually used during shows. With the alarms having gone off, a car belonging to Fidelity Security Services arrived just a few minutes later, something which caused the men to shout to one another that it was time to shoot.

As if they had no intention to kill anybody but to take the money, one of them fired seven random shots in an attempt to scare the unarmed driver who quickly reversed his car and sped off.
It is suspected that the robbers had left a getaway car around Gobholo as this was the direction they took after the shooting.
