CIVIL SERVANTS DECLARE WAR ON GOVT

MANZINI - Unions have threatened to shut down all government departments as civil servants will march to deliver a petition to the ‘god’ within government.

This decision was taken by public sector association (PSAs) during their day-long meeting which was held at SNAT centre yesterday where they discussed the issue of pay rise for senior government officers.

Again, this decision was taken regardless that Form III and V pupils were writing their external examinations. In a press conference, which was held the SNAT centre yesterday afternoon, the union leaders said they were shocked by government’s behaviour and attitude. They said it made them believe that there was a ‘god baal’ within government and was bigger than the negotiation table as he undermined it together with fair labour practice.

They said they were not sure yet who the ‘baal’ was but they would find out before Tuesday’s march because they have to march to him to deliver their grievances as civil servants. When announcing the big march, Bheki Mamba, the Swaziland Democratic Nurses Union (SWADNU) president said the alarming pay rise for senior government officers directly contradicted the 2016 salary review collective agreement, which government signed with them.

In the collective agreement, Mamba said they agreed with government that if there would be concerns regarding the salary review, there would be appeals which would be done by another consultant.

“However, through the powers of ‘baal’, government selected some matters in the about 200 pending appeals on the negotiation table and increased their salaries behind the scene; without the knowledge of the round table,” Mamba said.
