MBABANE  – “I’m just a man who loves Princess Skhanyiso”.  This is a statement that was made by Inkhosi Hhoyi or Chief Hhoyi II, who has broken the silence on the exchange he had with Inkhosatana Sikhanyiso during the Reed Dance earlier this month.

Chief Hhoyi II, whose name is Sandile Ngomane, left people wondering after he was afforded the rare opportunity of kudlalisela before the princess and even placed some feathers on her head, which unfortunately fell as he could not properly plant them.

During an interview with the chief at the Mountain Inn last week, the traditional leader from Mpumalanga confirmed that he had sought permission to go and appreciate the princess during the Reed Dance, stating that although he had not proposed, talks had already commenced with the relevant authorities.

“I am hoping that she’ll eventually feel the same in the nearest future,” said the soft-spoken chief.
He dismissed allegations that he was a wealthy businessman who owned many farms.
“I don’t own the farms alone. I am holding the farms on behalf of my community,” he said.

He said he was just a chief who was lucky to be supported by his community, government and businesspeople.
Ngomane (42) presides over the Hhoyi Traditional Council in Mpumalanga, near the Nkomazi area in South Africa.

During the interview, he explained that the black item that was left on the Reed Dance arena at Ludzidzini was a feather.
He said culturally, he was supposed to have inserted the feather somewhere on the princess’s shield (lihawu) but he became nervous and filled with mixed emotions that he ended up just placing it on the ground.
