WANTED MAN SHOT DEAD BY THE POLICE

MASEYISINI – The small community of Maseyisini was on Friday night jolted from their sleep by police gunfire which resulted in the death of a man they believed was armed at the time.

Reports are that the man was shot at around 11pm, but managed to flee the scene of the dramatic shooting, only to be discovered dead by residents early on Saturday morning.
While there were varying narrations on the circumstances leading to the man’s death, several residents admitted hearing gunshots on Friday night.

One of the versions asserts that the entire episode started at a certain bar in the area, where police were informed that there was a man carrying a gun.
Maseyisini is situated halfway between the Mahamba Border Gate and Nhlangano.

One of the accounts was that the man had earlier threatened someone with the gun, and that the he was further overheard saying he was looking for customers to buy a gun while at the drinking hall.
It then turned out that officers also had information linking the same man to a string of armed robberies and housebreakings committed in different areas.
Information gathered was that armed officers were dispatched to the area on the same night.

The officers are alleged to have proceeded to the local bar, where a man fitting the description of the suspect was found enjoying alcoholic beverages in the company of friends.
Witnesses said officers attempted to negotiate with the man to get into a police van.
However, the defiant suspect ignored the orders and put up a fight, according to the police.

It is unclear if the man had aimed or attempted to fire at the officers who were trying to apprehend him but what is certain is that no officer was injured during the confrontation.
It was reported that during the scuffle, the man managed to slip away and that was when officers opened fire.
Despite the gunfire, the man continued to flee and disappeared into the night. He was later found dead by residents who were going to fetch water, early on Saturday morning.
Several interviewed residents said they heard at least three gunshots on the night.
