MANZINI – A group of eight Swazis have reported a local businessman for allegedly trafficking them to Oman, a country in the Asian continent, for work purposes.

The businessman, also a Swazi, was reported to the Royal Swaziland Police after the workers, who are engaged in the businessman’s construction company, claimed that they were being exploited in the foreign country.
The state of Oman is located on the Asian continent. Its neighbouring countries are the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and Yemen, among others.

Human trafficking is the trade of humans, most commonly for the purpose of forced labour, sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others.

Three of the Swazis who are alleged to have left the country in April and made their way to Oman through Muscat International Airport for some construction work recently got hold of Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba.
They alleged to Mamba that they had been forced to work odd hours, were being underpaid and further not allowed to return to Swaziland anymore.

The Swazis who will not be named for fear of victimisation alleged that the businessman prepared visas, work permits and international passports before their departure to Oman after allegedly getting a multi-million tender in that country.

“Besicela nje Ntfulini kubekhona lenikwentako ngalobabe, nimkhulumise noma nimushayele njengemaphoyisa, asisati kutsi sitawubhekaphi wena wekunene,”   a voice recording sent to the Police PRO pleads, loosely translated ‘We are kindly requesting that you get in touch with this man and do something as soon as possible.’
