GOVT WANTS US TO DIE FROM HUNGER – ELDERLY

MBABANE – As the elderly’s non-payment situation worsens, they have concluded that government wants them to die from hunger.

This stance was conveyed by the elderly from around Mbabane, as they said they had no food for a while due to that government has not come to their rescue by disbursing their grants. The affected are those who get their money from the Post Office and constituencies.

According to the elderly who had not been paid for four months now, this was a month later than the usual time of receiving their grants. They said they usually got the money after every three months. What makes the elderly feel neglected by government is the fact that they have ailments which require them to take medication.

These first entail that they eat something before taking their medication. Currently, this is not easy as they are sometimes forced to take their tablets on empty stomachs because they have no resources with which to get food other than the grants from government. Josephine Nkambule said she was only left with mealie meal, which her grandchildren use to cook sour porridge.

She said this was their meal for days as they have no other means to get food. Nkambule’s grandchildren said they eat sour porridge in the morning before going to school, and eat the same meal when they return from school and before going to bed.
They said even though it was not something that sustains them, they have gotten used to the situation because there was nothing more they could do.

They said this was their best meal currently, as compared to other days when they are forced to go to bed on empty stomachs.  Nkambule said the situation was worse because his son was also unemployed, but lived on the little he makes from temporary jobs.
