LOBAMBA – Government would do well by fixing the country’s roads first before implementing the proposed new traffic fines.

This was said by senators yesterday during the debate of the Road Traffic Regulations Notice, 2017, which was facilitated by a motion moved by Senator Ndumiso Mdluli.

During the debate, the senators made it known that they supported the proposed road traffic regulations but had problems with the hefty traffic fines and the fact that government was not doing much to improve the country’s roads, especially in the rural areas.

First to make a submission was Senator Lungile Gama, who mentioned that she supported the regulations especially since they were meant to lessen accidents on the country’s roads but that there was a lot that needed to be done first before traffic fines could be implemented.

“I request that before we increase the fines, let us start by correcting the wrongs that already exist, which include the bad state of our roads,” she said.
She mentioned that at Dlangeni where she resided, it was a problem as there were no feeder roads to assist drivers. “I have never seen a grader for a feeder road in the area where I reside. The problem is so serious so much that during rainy days, I am sometimes forced to park my car at a neighbour’s home,” she said.
Gama said there was also a challenge in that there were now many cars on the country’s roads yet not much was being done to fix and improve them.
