MANTABENI – As if to make sure that she successfully ended her life, a female UNISWA student allegedly ingested weevil tablets and later hanged herself.

The incident, which left the entire community stunned, occurred at Mantabeni, where Temhlanga Shongwe (21) lived with her family.
Shongwe was doing her third year at the Universtity of Swaziland (UNISWA), Luyengo Campus and had been attached to Masibekela Primary School for her internship.

Temhlanga was allegedly discovered by her older brother, Dumisani, hanging from the rafters of her bedroom, which is semi-detached from the family’s main house on Saturday morning. The family is still trying to find answers on why their daughter was so desperate to end her life.

She allegedly used a rope the family utilised to tie their goats.
Her mother, who preferred to be called Make Shongwe, said the only thing her daughter had complained about recently was that she had finished her internship allowance, and was not sure what she had done with it.
“I told her that she had used the money to buy clothes so that she could be presentable as she did her internship, and that she had done well,” she said.

According to a neighbour who was found at the homestead with other mourners, Make Shongwe had left the homestead in the morning hours, as she had errands to run in South Africa.
