MANZINI – A total of 20 pupils cheated death when the minibus they were travelling in was involved in a near fatal head-on-collision with another vehicle.

The accident took place near Mkhuzweni, along the accident prone Hhelehhele-Siphofaneni Public Road at around 7:30am yesterday. It involved the minibus which was loaded with 20 pupils from Gilgal and Phonjwane Primary and High School pupils and a VW Golf IV sedan.

A source who witnessed the accident said the minibus was coming from Manzini moving towards Siphofaneni, while the VW Golf IV sedan was going the opposite direction. At the area where the accident took place, the road is marked with two solid lines in the middle.
The source said since it was rush hour, both vehicles were speeding and when it was approaching a stream, the driver of the VW Golf IV allegedly overtook a Nissan LDV and there was no way he could have avoided the head-on-collision as his car was already on the opposite lane and the speeding minibus was close.

“After the collision, the driver of the minibus swayed the vehicle towards the opposite lane to avoid falling into the stream and it eventually landed in a drainage on the lane going towards Manzini,” the source said.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged, especially on the front and oil was spilt all over the road. Police and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel, who are widely known as paramedics, were called and they responded promptly.
All 20 pupils were rushed to the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital where 18 of them were treated and discharged, while two were admitted as they sustained serious injuries.
