MBABANE – A man has been left with a gaping hole in his mouth that runs through to his neck after being shot by a police officer in what they have termed ‘an accidental shooting’.

An account by the police on what transpired during the incident differs from that given by sources, who also witnessed the shooting.
Sources have alleged that it all started when the police officer from KaPhunga shot the man in the mouth in broad daylight at Mphomphotha area and the bullet came out through his neck.

The man was apparently walking on the street when the cop fired at him.
Thandukwazi Mamba was shot on Friday at around 2:30pm by the police officer and he was rushed to Hlatikhulu Government Hospital, before being transferred to the Mbabane Government Hospital due to the seriousness of his injuries.

Information gathered is that when the police officer was questioned by his colleagues on what happened and why he chose to open fire on Mamba, he claimed that the survivor was in possession of dagga and he was allegedly trying to run away when he was being arrested.

It is alleged that the other police officers at the station, after receiving the report of the shooting, asked the officer in question to hand over the dagga, which was in Mamba’s possession, but it was not available. The officer was apparently driving a police vehicle on the Friday in the company of another and he used a work pistol to shoot Mamba.

Following the incident, Mamba was hurriedly ferried to hospital by police officers in a critical condition.
However, police have given a different version of what happened during the day of the incident though they concede that it was an ‘accidental shooting’ by a police officer.
