LOBAMBA – Matters relating to the administration of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Swaziland Branch continue to be a hot potato.

This played itself out yesterday when the Deputy Speaker, Esther Dlamini, announced that each Member of Parliament (MP) had to pay a subscription of E350, which is equivalent to a day’s sitting.

Dlamini, when making announcements before the sitting said once the MPs had pledged or committed to pay the subscription, they would then receive the merchandise which was donated by the Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accidents Fund (SMVAF) a week ago that included tracksuit jackets and golf shirts.

However, Matsanjeni North MP Phila Buthelezi was not happy with this arrangement. “Are they selling us the tracksuits or using them to attract members into the CPA?” asked MP Buthelezi.
He said he was clearly of the view that one could only get the clothes if they joined the CPA. “Are we talking about the CPA that we elected in the House?” he wondered.

In response, the deputy Speaker said, ever since she joined Parliament in 2003, they had to pay a subscription fee in order to join the organisation and said at that time it was E250.
She said the money was needed for operations of the organisation, citing that many other parliamentarians wanted to visit Swaziland, but there was no money in the account.
