MBABANE – Municipals and Town Board councillors are aggrieved following government’s decision to call for local government elections’ before their term of office expires.

The timing has been viewed as a calculated move to ‘fire’ councillors, something, which has resulted in deciding on taking government to court if government does not pay them for the seven months that they would be out of office.
Councillors and mayors would officially leave office on May 31, 2017, making way for the new electorate.

Illegal

Some of the councillors are aggrieved at this decision and said government’s move was illegal as the outdated Urban Government Act of 1969, which fell away in the advert of the 2005 Constitution.

“We know that some councillors felt aggrieved, from what I heard. However, I haven’t seen any of them since but I have just heard mumblings around,” George Falcomer, Ezulwini Town Board Councillor said, though he pointed out that he was not one of those who feel there was a sinister motive in government’s decision to call for elections a few months before their term of office expired.

He said all councillors were called to a meeting at Esibayeni but unfortunately the meeting started a bit later than it had been scheduled and he had to leave for South Africa.

Meeting

“But prior to that meeting, we were given notice that all councillors must attend the meeting. We were not told the reasons for the meeting, if I remember very well.”
