MANZINI – A Swazi couple who had travelled with a relative to South Africa were hijacked while driving their car, a seven-seater Toyota Wish while at Zola 3, a location in Johannesburg.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Thelma Nhlabatsi said she had travelled with her husband, Caiphas and a relative, Vusi Dlamini, to relatives at the place where they were to also to deliver avocados, when they decided to park the car near the main gate.
Two minutes later, the couple allegedly saw the car being driven off by unknown men and being closely followed by another vehicle, a Toyota.

“We were left stranded at the gate and we were shocked because the car was taken without its keys by the hijackers. After the incident, we called the nearest police station with the assistance of our relatives, and the police quickly responded and took us to the police station for statements.”
“What shocked us is that upon arrival there, we noticed that the junior officers recording the statements wrote the wrong registration number, and when he was told to record the right one by one of his colleagues, he did not,” Nhlabatsi said.

She added that the car had cash, which they were going to use while in South Africa, their luggage and also passports and identity documents.
Nhlabatsi said they were ordered to leave after they had recorded the statements and at about 11pm, one of the officers came to the relatives house and told them that the car had been recovered.
The officer is alleged to have stated that since it was late, the couple had to report to the police station on the following morning to collect the car.
“The officer called one of his colleagues in front of us and informed him that we were going to meet him in the morning to get the vehicle. However, when we called the same number in the morning, we were told by the officer that they needed E1 500 to get the car at KwaZulu-Natal.

“The statement infuriated us and we decided to return to the same police station. Before getting there we decided to go through a compound where they keep stolen vehicles in Lenasia to check the database. When we got there we were informed that our car was still listed as missing,” Nhlabatsi said.
