MAFUTSENI – A man literally grabbed his wife from her fiancé amidst preparations for a second marriage to the new man.

The incident unfolded recently in Mafutseni at a place called Mahlabane where the wife lived in a rented flat with her new man, a 32-year-old single farmer.
The couple of Lungelo Mncube and 23-year-old Nombuso arrived at the Lukhele homestead at the beginning of April and they have been living there with Nombuso’s two-year-old son, whom she has with her husband.
Mncube said he had only heard about Sikhondze, the husband, from Nombuso who told him that they had separated.

“I believed her when she said it was over as she made certain allegations against her husband. The scars that she bears all over the body are evidence of the physical abuse that she has been subjected to.” He said he was now making plans to marry her even though he was not sure if he would do so through Swazi Law and Custom or through Civil Rites. Mncube, who is employed as a farmer in a local private farm, said he was shocked when Sikhondze arrived at his flat in the company of some women to take away his fiancée.

“I was not home when they came but I arrived shortly and joined the meeting that also involved my landlord.”
He said despite that Sikhondze allegedly hurled all sorts of unpalatable words towards him, he kept his calm and did not answer back. Mncube said he allowed his fiancée to leave with Sikhondze and the women but he was hopeful that she would come back when all talks were over.

The landlord’s wife confirmed that a man came for his wife on Thursday, a woman they had always known to be Mncube’s girlfriend. She did not delve into her tenant’s matters, saying she respected his privacy. Some women of the area described Mncube as clam person, whom they have seen around the area for a while now.
Senator Jomo Dlamini said Swazi tradition was anchored by witnesses as most of the customs are not in black and white. He said in such a case, only families can nullify a Swazi Law and Custom marriage because out of the family members there will come witnesses.

“No matter the situation, one cannot just wake up in the morning and claim that their marriage was over.” Dlamini stated clearly that he personally did not condone domestic violence, just like Swazi culture does not. He said there are forums where such issues can be discussed and resolutions being taken.
