MBABANE - What you would expect to be fun and games is not the case as an app has resulted in the death of a number of young girls.

The ‘Blue Whale’ is a fatal game that was created by Philipp Budeikin (21) from Russia, targeted at young stressed and depressed girls to do extreme tasks, which end up taking their lives. Budeikin is currently being held on charges of inciting at least 16 schoolgirls to kill themselves by taking part in the game.

The fatal game, which police fear is spreading to the UK, involves urging vulnerable teenagers to carry out a series of tasks over a period of 50 days. These can include watching horror movies, waking up in the middle of the night and self-harming. On the last day, they’re urged to take their own life. Following this new app, a warning to parents is that they should talk to their children and emphasise that they can make their own choices and discuss ways of how to say no.

Reassuring a child that they can still be accepted even if they don’t go along with the crowd, will help stop them from doing something that could hurt them or make them uncomfortable.

Clinical Psychologist, Ndo Mdlalose advised that if one came to a realisation that he was not well, he should seek professional help because anyone could upload anything on social media.
Noting that Budeikin had confessed, she said for starters he was not trained adding that such apps were destructive
“I do not see why a person in their right mind would do these tasks seeing that the methods are not working. Social media is very god but also very damaging.”
