MBABANE – “I recall one instance where I hugged a female student congratulating her for her good performance and that student never took offence as she also viewed the hug as congratulatory and innocent.”

This was the submission of Sandile Hlophe, the University of Swaziland (UNISWA) Assistant Registrar (IT), who has been charged for allegedly sexually harassing female students.

He has since approached the court seeking an order restraining the management of the learning institution from proceeding with his disciplinary hearing. Hlophe, who is based in the IT department, is alleged to have started sexually abusing the female students within the learning institution, Kwaluseni Campus, since 2013.

In their different statements, the female students alleged that when they required services from Hlophe’s department, he would make sexual advances. Hlophe would allegedly ask for hugs, kisses and sometimes show the students his private parts.
In his application, Hlophe alleged that this issue was concluded in October 31, 2016 after the registrar of the learning institution issued a verbal warning against him.

According to Hlophe, he once had a meeting with Dr Salebona Simelane, where he explained that he knew nothing about the sexual harassment.

He claimed that he went on to state that he recalled one instance where he hugged a female student congratulating her for her good results. “The registrar admonished me for such conduct, saying it should not have happened in the first place and gave me a verbal warning in accordance with Article 5.01 of UNISWA’s disciplinary code,” alleged Hlophe.
