MANZINI – Two people lost their lives in a head-on collision that took place along Hhelehhele Road yesterday morning.

The horrific accident involved a kombi that was destined for Mozambique carrying 14 passengers excluding the driver, and a sedan believed to be an Astra with three passengers. The car was driven by a female, heading in the Manzini direction.

According to an eyewitness account, the kombi was headed towards Hhelehele and there were no other cars in close proximity. However, it has not been established what could have disturbed the female driver who reportedly veered into the kombi’s lane, hitting it before the sedan overturned.

The accident happened at around 8am, causing temporary stall traffic for almost an hour.
The driver of the kombi, 40-year- old Fransisco Macheven, was treated and discharged along with the kombi passengers.
He is originally from Matola in Mozambique and was only in the country to work. He said his kombi left Manzini Bus Rank at 7:30am.

He alleged that neither he nor the other driver were overtaking as each vehicle was on its rightful lane, but that the female driver suddenly drove straight towards him, killing two of her passengers. Paramedics were found giving first aid to the injured kombi passengers, while two tow trucks removed the vehicles from the accident scene.

The two who died were passengers in the Astra and their names could not be ascertained at the time of compiling this report.
However, police were only able to confirm that the deceased were a female aged 33 from Siteki and a male estimated to be around 42 also from Siteki.
