MAYIWANE – Police officers had to be roped in at Mavula under Mayiwane Inkhundla during the 2017 Census recruitment exercise.

The exercise is one of many which were taking place in some parts of the country to recruit people who are expected to participate in the official counting of people in the country.
It was announced that 3 000 people would be recruited for the exercise.

The census whose theme is ‘Setsembe wena kutsi ubalwe’ is expected to run from April 29, 2017 to May 11, 2017.
The two days following the exercise will be used for counting.
Hundreds of residents gathered to try their luck for the job opportunities that are available.

The census is being funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development.
While scores of residents from the surrounding chiefdoms of Mavula were waiting to be selected, chaos broke out.

Angry residents accused officials of recruiting people from other chiefdoms, which were not under the constituency of Mayiwane.
Nathi Tsabedze, the Bucopho for Mayiwane Inkhundla, who was present during the recruitment exercise, confirmed that residents were furious.
He also confirmed that the police had to intervene in fear that there could be some damage to property.

“They were angry that residents from Timphisini were also participating,” said Tsabedze.
He said had it not been for the police officers’intervention, residents would have become violent.

Tsabedze said the police officers advised that the exercise should then continue today.
According to Muzi Phiri who is the headman for Pigg’s Peak constituency, a similar exercise yielded positive results in other areas already.
