MBABANE – Holding on to their marriage vows proved difficult for a total of 219 couples who filed for divorce last year.

This is according to the 2016/17 annual performance report which was tabled by the Minister of Home Affairs, Princess Tsandzile.

Some of the high profile divorce cases that were filed last year include that of Prime Minister Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini and his ex-wife Joy Maziya, African Alliance CEO Nelisiwe Mabuza and businessman Alex Fakudze.
The report indicates that the highest nullification or registration of divorces occurred in the last three months of 2016 where 101 couples applied to get divorced.
The highest figure was recorded during the festive month of December where 53 couples wanted out of their unions.

However, not all was gloom and doom as more couples have registered to be married both by civil rites and Swazi Law and Custom.
A total of 2 806 couples registered to be married with a figure of 1 495 wanting to marry or get certificates the traditional way.

However, these marriages were only the ones registered at the ministry’s headquarters in Mbabane and do not include regional figures.
The Civil Registration Department further reported that a seemingly high number of 119 applications for people who wanted to get married outside the country were received.

“About 119 applications for Status Clearance Letters were received by the department. All were approved and issued with the confirmation letters authorising them to get married to foreigners in their countries,” the ministry reported.
It was also reported that 18 applications for authority to get married in the country between Swazi nationals and foreigners were received by the department.
All 18 applicants met the necessary requirements and were granted permission to get married in Swaziland.
