MBABANE – A landslide resulting from yesterday’s heavy downpour confined traffic to one lane along the Ngwenya-Mbabane Highway.

Motorists headed for Ngwenya had to spend hours trying to pass through as the road was full of muddy soil and rocks.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba urged road users to be careful when faced with such conditions where soil and rocks had collapsed onto the road. “We will be controlling traffic along that area for a smooth flow and we will also put warning signs to indicate that there is a hazard ahead,” said Mamba.

He also highlighted that people driving vehicles should not attempt to force their way in situations like this because it is dangerous. “If they attempt to pass through, they put their lives in danger. Even in cases where a river is overflowing and the bridge is submerged, people should not attempt to cross.”

Mamba also pointed out that due to the continuous rainfall, roads were slippery and it was imperative for road users to ensure that they reduced speed in order to avoid accidents.
Meanwhile, vehicles had difficulty passing through the capital as traffic lights became faulty due to the heavy storm which resulted in a power outage.

By 5pm, which is usually the peak hour, traffic congested at the intersection near the Galp and Engen filling stations and also at the Total Gardens intersection. A chaotic scene was avoided though as a police officer controlled traffic at the Total Gardens intersection.
