MBABANE – He allegedly made court records disappear with ease. Nhlangano Magistrates Court typist Mbhekeni Dlamini was allegedly known to some for receiving amounts of about E500 in order to steal and destroy court records for convicts to avoid paying fines.

This transpired during trial yesterday. He has been charged with contravening the Prevention of Corruption Act of 2006 and the alternative charge was that of defeating the ends of justice or obstructing the cause of justice.
Dlamini is alleged to have stolen a court record containing a charge sheet and record of proceedings, as well as the conviction and sentence of a teacher of Nyamane Primary School, who had been charged with drink-driving.

The teacher, Mfanafuthi Nxumalo, had been sentenced to pay a fine of E2 000 in 2010 and payment of the fine was deferred to the end of January 2011. The file was allegedly stolen between the period of sentencing and January 31 when he was expected to have paid the fine.
However, Nxumalo yesterday told Judge Mbutfo Mamba that after being convicted and sentenced, he met another teacher, Vusani, at the magistrates court, who was from another school.

He said this teacher called him to the toilets and informed him that he knew of an employee within the court who could assist him by stealing and destroying his file at a fee.

Nxumalo said Vusani told him that the exercise would cost him a sum of E500.
Nxumalo agreed to the deal and he said he gave the money to Vusani and he left the court.
