MBABANE – The expected tropical Cyclone Dineo has sent a lot of panic to the point that stakeholders have recommended that schools be closed tomorrow and Friday.

The recommendation was made by representatives from the Swaziland Meteorological Services, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) as well as the Swaziland Baphalali Red Cross Society yesterday.

This was during a meeting to look into some preventive measures that could be taken to minimise the impact of the cyclone should it eventually hit the country.

The meeting was also attended by officials from the Ministry of Health.
However, government is yet to confirm if it will heed to this particular preventative measure as no confirmation had been received last night if pupils should attend school or not. This was one of several other measures that the stakeholders deliberated on. Others, which have been suggested, include having evacuation centres prepositioned.

The public has also been warned to keep their house windows closed and not to have open fires.
People are further advised to dig trenches next to houses to avoid flooding.

“No crossing of over flooded rivers, whether by car or foot, and power lines should be avoided at all costs,” reads some of the preventive measures which the stakeholders agreed on.

Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Paul Dlamini confirmed that the NDMA had met with other stakeholders to look at how they could minimise the impact of the cyclone should it hit.
