MBABANE – As the country develops and more people continue to build new houses, government has set aside E20 million to study the possibility of having additional water supply for the Mbabane-Manzini corridor.

In not more than two years, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy will have tangible documentation that might see the start of the construction of a dam to supply homes along the corridor.

The dam will be known as Nondvo Dam. This corridor has had new infrastructural developments over recent years in various areas which have added the demand for water from the limited local dams.

New infrastructural projects along the corridor include Woodlands Township, Lomkiri Township, Lozitha, the International Convention Centre, Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (SMVAF) building, Swaziland National Pension Fund (SNPF) building, Public Service Pension Fund (PSPF) Hotel and the Corporate Place, to mention but a few.

Rationing

The concept of the new dam will come as good news to residents of Mbabane, in particular those who have had to be subjected to water rationing due to insufficient water supply which was caused by the drought that hit the country last year.
The drought saw residents of the capital city having to live without water for up to three days.

During the drought period, the main dam supplying Mbabane residents, Hawane Dam reached lows of up to one per cent.
The Swaziland Water Services Corporation (SWSC) was often on the receiving end of criticism during the drought for not having adequate water supplies for the capital city.
