NEW GOVT POLICY TO ELIMINATE FAILURES

MBABANE – Government is doing away with failures. This will certainly put the country’s education system to the test in the coming years as it is expected that there will be almost no failures among pupils who write internal examination.

This is because the Ministry of Education and Training is working around the clock to introduce a strict normal progression policy that will almost eliminate failures in the country’s schools but this will not apply to external examinations such as Grade VII and the Junior Certificate (JC).
The proposed policy will provide that only five per cent will be expected to fail in a school and not more than that.

Information gathered by this newspaper was that the ministry actually alerted teachers on the plan way back in 2015 where the recommendation was 10 per cent.
Inspectors visited different schools and educated the academic staff on the plan and that while some tried to introduce and implement the policy, they were not happy with the results.

Other schools did not bother at all.
The proposed strategy will apply to all classes in primary, secondary and high schools except Grade VII, Form III and V where they write external examinations and the discretion of passing lies with the Examinations Council of Swaziland.

This means that for a class that has 40 pupils, only four will be expected to fail, which means that only special circumstances like absenteeism will make pupils not pass the grade and progress to the next class.

Information gathered is that to ensure that the process is done perfectly by schools, head teachers will be expected to register with the different regional education offices where the number of pupils and those who progressed to the next class will be determined.
