MANZINI - With the promise of lucrative returns, about 20 Royal Swaziland Police (RSP) officers have reportedly been robbed of about E200 000 through a supposed stokvel.

Information gathered is that the woman who helped the officers join is a lecturer in one of the colleges in the capital city.
According to officers, the woman told them that one of the stokvel’s managers, who was also responsible for taking out the dividends had fled to South Africa with their money.
The police officers are based at the headquarters and various police stations, mostly Mbabane.

The officers are said to have paid various amounts of money ranging from E500 to E1 000 into the informal organisation since 2015.
Most of them are said to have obtained loans from financial institutions to join the stokvel and make meaningful contributions.
They had been promised to get dividends twice a year; in June and December.

Last month, the officers reportedly expected money totalling up to E24 000 per person.
However, when this did not happen, they realised that they had been robbed.
It could not be ascertained whether the stokvel was only limited to police or not but according to sources, the officers made the majority of members.

Feeling embarrassed about their situation, the officers preferred not to be named.
“In the beginning all was well. we would get our dividends as promised and that gave us confidence to recruit more members. We would deposit money monthly and also borrow from the stokvel. We were hoping that in December we would get our money and be able to pay school fees in January,” said one of the officers.
