MANZINI – Finally, government has swallowed its pride and succumbed to the demands of TUCOSWA.

Government has addressed two major issues which have resulted in the union reducing its four-day mass protest action targeting the ongoing SADC Summit to a two-day march to deliver petitions to various ministries.

This was after government, through the Ministry of Education and Training, together with that of Labour and Social Security, signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the trade union in the major issues, which were giving rise to the mass protest action.

In its notice of mass protest action, the Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA) complained about the inability by the Education Ministry to pronounce against the unfair treatment of widows working in national schools, on account of being in mourning. It also expressed dissatisfaction in the inability by the Labour Ministry to assist in the discussion of the matter.

The federation then demanded that the two ministries should make the announcement cautioning against the dismissal of widows working in national schools on account of their being in mourning. It called upon the Labour Ministry to assist by making officials aware of the illegality of such actions.

The other demand was that government should ratify Convention 189, which was adopted by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) during its conference on June 16, 2011. The convention which is also referred to as the Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189), seeks to ensure decent work for domestic workers.

After receiving the notice, the Labour Advisory Board (LAB) noted that it met all the requirements of Section 40 (1) (a), (b) and (c) (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) of the Industrial Relations Act of 2000 as amended.
