MANZINI – A senior policeman’s wife was so devastated when she was served divorced papers that she chose to end her life by swallowing weevil tablets.

The harrowing incident took place last week at the police officer’s workstation in Simunye. The wife was a seamstress within the Manzini Central Business District, opposite the First National Bank (FNB).

According to the deceased woman’s workmates, Nokuthula Phelele Kunene (41) received an unanticipated visit last week from court messengers, while at her office located at the Design Centre, Office Number 20.

The messengers had come to inform her of divorce proceedings, which had been instituted by her husband.
Kunene then immediately locked up her office and made her way to Simunye where her husband is stationed. She is said to have used public transport instead of her Isuzu Double-Cab.

On reaching her destination, she made a beeline to the house where she sometimes visited her estranged husband. Although separated, the couple is said to have sometimes enjoyed intimate moments together at the police camp.

According to one of her co-workers, the couple was ruined by allegations of infidelity. A week before she killed herself, there had allegedly been serious tension between the two, to the point that Kunene travelled to the police camp to ascertain certain information from her husband.
She is said to have spent three days with her husband at the house.

When she returned on Monday, she was in high spirits and went on to lecture those close to her that they should never react irrationally as marriage was sometimes sweet and at times sour.

It is alleged that the summons she received the next day pushed her over the edge and that was when she decided to end her life.
“She was very upset when she was left alone in the office clutching the sheath of court papers. She could not believe that her husband wanted out of the marriage spanning over a number of years. She then travelled to her husband’s workplace in Simunye,” a workmate revealed.

According to sources close to the matter, when she got to the police camp, Kunene began screaming, demanding to know why her husband wanted her out of his life. “She made it clear that she would rather die than agree to the divorce proceedings and that was when it was noted that she had weevil tablets,” a source said.

Although those present were able to forcefully grab the deadly tablets from her clutches, it later emerged that Kunene allegedly hid one of the pills in her clothes and proceeded to swallow it.

“Sudden screams pierced the air and she was found writhing on the ground next to her house, clutching onto her stomach.”
Neighbours who rushed to her sid

e realised that she had swallowed the deadly pill and her husband was immediately called from the police station located near the Simunye Plaza.
Kunene was rushed to the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital, where she died while receiving treatment.
