MANZINI – The Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Head Office is extremely shocked to have received reports that one of its branches is alleged to be treating employees so inhumanly, after two of them were allegedly locked inside a walk-in freezer last week.

KFC’s Branches Human Resources (HR) Manager Leonard Bennett said they were not aware that such was happening in one of their branches and said as soon as they were made aware of the incident, they began their investigations.
“The matter was reported to the head office and we are still conducting investigations on how it happened. We would not like to comment further on it, however we will compile a report, which is going to be released before the end of the week,” Bennett said.

When this reporter paid an undercover visit to the affected branch, a group of employees were found hurdled in a corner, discussing the incident and some of them were heard saying they wondered who had leaked the story, which they had been warned not to discuss with anyone.
Further probing revealed that one of the employees had been transferred to another branch, in Mbabane, and the other is still working at the branch.

Victimisation

One of the employees, who preferred not to be named for fear of victimisation, said the incident had left everyone shocked at the popular food outlet. The employee said one manager at the store, who will not be named as he had not been charged or questioned by the police, allegedly locked two female employees inside the store’s freezer, after he had allegedly ordered them to take out patties from the main freezer.
When Bennett was further asked about the culture of ill-treatment in their food outlets, he refused to comment about it and said since they were still compiling a report and conducting further investigations, talking about the matter would jeopardise their inquiry.

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba confirmed the matter and said an enquiry file had been opened.
“The prosecution is also working hand in hand with the police on how the matter could be handled. Currently no one has been questioned or arrested, pending the investigations,” Mamba said.
