HLATIKHULU – Seven pupils, including a girl, were sent home at Christ The King High School on Monday after they were found drunk.

Teachers would not give their exact ages, but a majority of the affected pupils are doing Form IV, while another one is in Form I. The pupils are said to have bought an unspecified number of beer bottles, which they shared in a forest situated adjacent to the Hlatikhulu bus rank on Friday afternoon.

The pupils must have taken a lot since their behaviour prompted a passerby to alert school authorities about the binge.
Witnesses said a concerned parent became suspicious after noting the behavior of the pupils and asked school officials to go and investigate.
The school deputy head teacher reportedly went to the place and discovered that seven pupils from the school had been drinking in their uniforms, but it was already after school hours.
The bottles of the alcoholic beverages were also found at the scene.

It could not be immediately ascertained how the pupils managed to purchase the alcohol since there were age restrictions in place for liquour outlets; persons under the age of 18 are not allowed to buy alcohol.
The pupils were reportedly displaying drunken characteristics and had slurred speech.

As a consequence of their actions, the pupils were called to the Head teacher’s office during the school’s morning assembly prayer session on Monday. When contacted for comment, Dumisani Shabangu the head teacher confirmed that seven pupils were suspended after they were caught imbibing alcoholic beverages in town. However, Shabangu was worried that the good name of the school would be tarnished by the reports.
He said the pupils were told to bring their parents or guardians to a disciplinary hearing.

The disciplinary hearings were expected to begin last Tuesday but some of the affected pupils were turned back, and told that their matter would not proceed since the person who caught them, the deputy head teacher, was not at school. Shabangu said: “Unfortunately the deputy was not at school when the pupils came with their parents. So the hearings have been shelved until he returns.”
This publication gathered that the suspended pupils have already missed certain papers in their ongoing mock exams. Coincidentally, the exams got underway on Monday, which was the day of their suspension.
