MBABANE – Not all Christians will abide by the request made by Roman Catholic Pope Francis to apologise to gays for the treatment they have been giving them.

Pope told masses that Christians and the Roman Catholic Church should apologise to gay people and seek their forgiveness for the way they have been treated.

He is said to have spoken during his departure from Armenia to Rome and his statement was prompted by the comments made by German Cardinal Reinhard Marx that the Church needed to say sorry for the way it has treated the gay community.
“We Christians have to apologise for so many things, not just for the treatment of gay people, but we must ask for forgiveness,” he was reported to have said.

The pope did not clarify on the treatment of gay people however, gays and lesbians are not accepted in some societies, including in Swaziland where even gay relationships are not fully recognised while gay marriages remain illegal.

Gays, who feature under the class of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Transsexual and Intersexes (LGBTI), have on several instances and platforms, raised concerns that their rights are not well take care of.

“Francis recalled Church teachings that homosexuals “should not be discriminated against. They should be respected, accompanied pastorally.”
He added: “I think that the Church not only should apologise ... to a gay person whom it offended but it must also apologise to the poor as well, to the women who have been exploited, to children who have been exploited by being forced to work. It must apologise for having blessed so many weapons.”

The Church teaches that homosexual tendencies are not sinful but homosexual acts are, and that homosexuals should try to be chaste,” reads a Reuters report made by Philip Pullella.
