NHLANGANO – FESWATU President Mashumi Shongwe, who recently went public about being a polygamist was in court yesterday after his first wife filed papers alleging that he threatened to shoot and kill her.

FESWATU is the acronym for Federation of Swaziland Trade Unions.
Tigezile Shongwe (42), who is a police officer, made the claims at the Nhlangano Magistrates Court, during her application for a peace binding order.

The allegations, which are yet to be tested in court, are contained in the wife’s statement, which she made before Senior Magistrate Philisiwe Dlamini.

The statement was also read in court yesterday in the presence of the FESWATU president, who is yet to respond through his attorneys.
Shongwe’s wife had informed the court that her marriage to the unionist went horribly wrong after he started accusing her of practising witchcraft, among other things.

This was after her 42-year-old husband fell seriously ill sometime last year, to the point of being admitted to a health facility in South Africa.
The court heard how Shongwe allegedly consulted over 11 traditional healers, who apparently linked his sickness to muti.
In her statement, the wife claims that Shongwe recently informed her that all the traditional healers pointed an accusing finger towards her.

The female police officer recalled how she had been happily married to the father of her two children since 1999, until frequent misunderstandings emerged last year after her husband decided to marry a second wife, whom he has accommodated at a house they built together at his mother’s parental homestead, situated at Makhwelela outside Nhlangano.
