NEW VILLAGE - The police have opened an inquiry after the mysterious death of a two-month-old baby girl, at a ‘day care centre’ on Saturday.

The baby’s mother, Tengetile Motsa (28), who is employed at Farm Lodge, said she found her baby lying lifeless and unresponsive after she had been picked up by the Matsapha police at her workplace on the day.

“The police came to my workplace and said I should go with them to the Matsapha Police Station, however, they did not tell me about the incident at the time. When I got to the police station, I was referred to a female officer, who related the sad news to me.

“We all headed to the place where I always leave my child and found her already dead. When I asked the lady who looked after her what happened, she said she suspected that my baby had choked after she had put her to sleep. I am still traumatised by the incident and cannot believe that my child is really gone,” Motsa said. She further said she had no idea what had happened to her child as the woman who looked after her had still not given her satisfactory answers. Motsa said her child was not sick at the time of her death.

“I bathed her in the morning and took her to the day care as usual. She was not sick and she did not even have a fever, something which most children suffer from every now and then. I left her and went to work. My cellphone battery went flat and I decided to charge it at my workplace.
At 5pm, the police came and fetched me.

When I questioned the woman about the incident, she said she had no idea what had happened. She said she had wrapped her in a small blanket and put her to sleep, only to realise later that she was unconscious,” Motsa said.
